January has brought icy-cold weather and some snow in places but spring is just around the corner; snowdrops are starting to flower – and produce that first pollen of the season!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our bees have enjoyed reasonably mild weather through winter so far. They will have been taking regular cleansing flights when weather permits and eating their way through their stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Be sure to check every week or two that the hives are steady and upright, and that the bees have enough stores. Give them fondant if there is any doubt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Don’t be too concerned if there are lots of dead bees around the hive stand. These will be the last of the summer bees and the oldest of the “winter” bees. Summer bees usually die “on the wing” so we don’t see them. Not so in winter: they expire inside the hive and the workers do their best to drag them outside. Check that hive entrances are clear of dead bees, especially behind mouse guards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
